Price labels in an American supermarket

Constant price changes for perishable products make the recurrent updating of price labels more complex. To manage the daily issue of price labels more effectively, the local supermarket in Cardiff-by-the-sea, California, installed an innovative system enabling it to print aesthetically pleasing price labels on plastic cards directly at the point of sale.

When Managing Director John Shamam attended NAFEM, the North American foodservice equipment show, in 2015, he discovered the Evolis printing system that enables retailers to design and issue price labels directly at the point of sale. Thanks to this system, the Seaside Market supermarket can harmonise the aesthetics of its meat, seafood, kitchen and delicatessen departments, as well as improving efficiency. All the staff agree that the time saved by not having to print, laminate and cut out paper signs every day for the four departments is a huge improvement.

The printer is placed in the office and used by the shop co-ordinator, who enters all new items into an organised database and creates card templates for each one. Product labels for the fish and meat departments are printed on black cards that have been tested for food compatibility by independent laboratories. Other product labels, such as those offered in the kitchen and delicatessen departments, are printed on white cards.
